Andreas Gottlieb Hoffmann

German Protestant theologian and Orientalist (1796–1864)

Their life

Andreas Gottlieb Hoffmann was born on 13 April 1796 in Welbsleben and died in Jena on 16 March 1864. He was a German Protestant theologian and Orientalist, and he became a leading authority on the Syriac and Hebrew languages. As a teenager, he served in the War of the Sixth Coalition with the Second Prussian Foot Jäger Detachment.

Hoffmann studied at the University of Halle, where he took his doctorate in 1820. His studies covered theology, Syriac, and Hebrew, and he was a pupil of Wilhelm Gesenius there. In 1823 he became an associate professor at the University of Jena, and in 1825 he was made a full professor. At Jena he taught church history, Old Testament exegesis, and the history of the Jewish people.

His best-known scholarly work was a Syriac grammar, the *Grammatica syriaca*, published in 1827, which was well received. He also produced a German translation of the Book of Enoch, titled *Das Buch Henoch in vollständiger Uebersetzung*, which drew on Richard Laurence's English edition. In addition, he made significant contributions to the second section of the *Ersch-Gruber Allgemeine Encyclopädie der Wissenschaften und Künste*.
