Their life

Mary Ann Evans (1819 to 1880), who wrote under the pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, poet, journalist, and translator, and is counted among the leading writers of the Victorian era. She published seven novels: Adam Bede, The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, the Radical, Middlemarch, and Daniel Deronda. Her work is noted for its realism, its psychological insight, its strong sense of place, and its detailed portrayal of the countryside.

Critics have praised her work highly. Virginia Woolf described Middlemarch as one of the few English novels written for grown-up people, and Martin Amis and Julian Barnes have called it the greatest novel in the English language.

Her personal life broke with the conventions of her time. From 1854 to 1878 she lived with George Henry Lewes, who was married, and she called him her husband. Lewes remained married to Agnes Jervis and supported their children, even after Jervis left him to live with another man. Eighteen months after Lewes died in 1878, Eliot married her longtime friend John Cross in May 1880. He was much younger than she was, and she took the name Mary Ann Cross. She died later that year, on 22 December 1880.
