Their life

E. T. A. Hoffmann was born Ernst Theodor Wilhelm Hoffmann on 24 January 1776 and died on 25 June 1822. He worked as a jurist, composer, music critic, and artist, and he wrote fantasy and Gothic horror as a German Romantic author. His short story "The Sandman" is considered a pioneering work of horror fiction. His novella Mademoiselle de Scuderi is regarded as one of the earliest examples of crime fiction.

Several of Hoffmann's works were later adapted in other forms. He wrote the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which served as the basis for Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. His stories also provided the source material for Jacques Offenbach's opera The Tales of Hoffmann, in which Hoffmann appears as the hero in a heavily fictionalized form. The ballet Coppélia draws on two other stories by him, and Robert Schumann's Kreisleriana is based on Hoffmann's character Johannes Kreisler.

Hoffmann is counted among the major authors of the Romantic movement. His stories had a considerable impact on 19th-century literature.
