Their life

Jean-Baptiste Petrus Trương Vĩnh Ký, known as Petrus Ký, lived from 6 December 1837 to 1 September 1898. He was a Vietnamese scholar whose publications helped people in colonial Vietnam and Europe understand one another better.

His work helped popularize the Vietnamese alphabet, chữ Quốc ngữ. The alphabet was later officialized in the early twentieth century.

He worked for the French colonial administration as a linguist. He also translated many literary works into modern Vietnamese.
