Their life
Nguyễn Đình Chiểu, whose Chinese-character name is 阮廷炤, was a Vietnamese poet who lived from 1 July 1822 to 3 July 1888. His writings were nationalist and opposed the French colonization of Cochinchina, the European name for southern Vietnam.
He became the best-known voice against collaboration with the French in the south. Among the southerners who refused to accept the Treaty of Saigon, which handed southern Vietnam to France, he was regarded as their poet laureate. He also went against the royal orders of Emperor Tự Đức by harassing French forces.
His epic poem *Lục Vân Tiên* is still counted among the most celebrated works in Vietnamese literature.
