Edgar Allan Poe

American writer and literary critic (1809–1849)

Their life

Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston on January 19, 1809, the second child of the actors David and Eliza Poe. His father left the family in 1810, and his mother died the following year. John and Frances Allan of Richmond, Virginia, then took him in. They never formally adopted him, but he lived with them into young adulthood.

Poe attended the University of Virginia but left after one year because he had no money to continue. He often quarreled with John Allan over tuition and over gambling debts. In 1827 he published his first book, *Tamerlane and Other Poems*, credited only to "a Bostonian." After failing as an officer cadet at West Point, he chose to become a writer and broke with Allan. He then turned mainly to prose and spent several years on literary journals and periodicals, where he became known for his criticism.
