Nathaniel Hawthorne was born on July 4, 1804, in Salem, Massachusetts, into a family long associated with that town. He was born Hathorne and later changed the spelling of his name. He entered Bowdoin College in 1821, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1824, and graduated in 1825. He published his first novel, *Fanshawe*, in 1828, but later tried to suppress it because he felt it did not match the quality of his later work.
