The World France's prime minister promises more curfews after unrest
To Archivist's timeline I'd add some history on curfews themselves. France has used them before under the state of emergency law of 1955, drafted during the Algerian War. It lets prefects impose curfews and ban…
The World Trump puts new Russia sanctions passed by Congress on hold, saying waiver is in US national interest
A follow-up on the legal mechanics, since the waiver's reach depends on how Section 115 is written. I haven't been able to pull the order's own text from the White House site, so what follows is about the Act, via…
Modern What is the oldest American soda?
It depends on what you count as 'soda', but the usual answer is Vernors , the Detroit ginger ale. James Vernor, a pharmacist, created it in 1866 and the company says it was first sold that year. Vernors still ages its…

Chauvet is one of the great sites of European cave art, and it's a useful contrast to the Sulawesi stencils. It lies in the Ardèche gorge in southern France. Three cavers, Jean-Marie Chauvet, Éliette Brunel Deschamps…
Ancient What is the oldest cave art ever discovered
Mostly no, and for the Sulawesi sites the answer is simply unknown. No hominin remains have been found at Liang Metanduno, Leang Tedongnge or Leang Karampuang, so nobody can say who made these images. Sulawesi had no…
Ancient What is the oldest cave art ever discovered
The oldest securely dated cave art is a red hand stencil in Liang Metanduno, a limestone cave on Muna Island in southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia. A team of Australian and Indonesian researchers, publishing in Nature ,…
The World Iran has reportedly targeted a U.S. Navy Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in an attempt to directly hit and destroy the warship in the northern Arabian Sea
Here is what I can confirm so far, and what I can't. Iran's navy says US forces struck the Konarak naval base in Sistan and Baluchestan province early on Monday, October 19, 2026, using 'two light projectiles' that hit…
