أذن الفأر

  • /ʔuðn al.faʔr/

Where it comes from

Literally “ear of the mouse”, calque of Ancient Greek μυοσωτίς (muosōtís, literally “mouse-ear”), probably via its calque Classical Syriac ܐܹܕܢܲܝ ܥܘ݂ܩܒܪ̈ܐ pl (ʾeḏnay ʿuqbǝrē, literally “mouse-ear”) which is also transmitted corruptly as an alleged **عَنْقَر (**ʕanqar), which should be corrected to عُقْبَر (ʕuqbar); pursuant to which this Arabic is also often posited in the plural.

noun أُذْن الفَأْر · ʔuḏn al-faʔr · آذَان الْفَأْر · - · أُذْن الْفَأْر

  1. Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see أُذْن (ʔuḏn), فَأْر (faʔr)
  2. forget-me-not, scorpion-grass (Myosotis gen. et spp., especially the blue forget-me-not, small-flowered forget-me-not (Myosotis stricta))
  3. pimpernel (Anagallis gen. et spp.)

    Similar: حَبَق الْفَتَى, أَنَاغَالِس, حَبَق الْفِيل
