دالية
- /daː.li.ja/
Where it comes from
From دَلْو (dalw, “bucket”) or related دَلَا (dalā, “to suspend, to let down in the water”) in the sense of a waterwheel; in all other senses presumed semantic loan from Aramaic דָלִיתָא / ܕܳܠܻܝܬ݂ܳܐ (dālīṯā, “vine; varicose vein”), although the sense of the deltoid muscle appears to be an Arabic figurative development from the idea of an espalier, which disregarded the more traditional medical sense.
In English
- grapevine the plant on which grapes grow
