قنابرى

  • /qun.naː.ba.raː/
  • /qu.naː.ba.raː/

Where it comes from

Borrowed from Classical Syriac ܩܘܢܒܪܐ (qunnābarā, qunnəbārā, “id.”), which cannot be sourced to a definite origin: it may be a partial calque or phono-semantic matching of Persian برغست (barġast), possibly employing the word קֵינָא (qennā, “nest”) reflected in Arabic as قُنّ (qunn) in the attested sense of “cluster” applied to leaves, see also Middle Armenian խրուկ (xruk, “whitetop”) of Persian derivation; or in view of uncertain vocalization in either case it may be the same word as the source of قُنْبَر (qunbar, “coir”) in reference to the invasive creeping nature of the plant.
