م²

Where it comes from

From Proto-Semitic, from Proto-Afroasiatic *m-. Cognate with Proto-Berber *-m- and Egyptian m-.

Sometimes thought to be derived from the pronouns present in Arabic مَا (mā), Hebrew מה (mā, “what”), and مَن (man), מי (mī, “who”), so that, for example, مُدَرِّس (mudarris, “teacher”) is originally مَنْ يُدَرِّس (man yudarris, “he who teaches”). Compare also Arabic مَكْتُوب (maktūb) versus Hebrew כתוב (kāṯūḇ), both meaning “written”, with prefix in Arabic, but without in Hebrew.
