مرو¹

  • /marw/

Where it comes from

From Aramaic מַרְוָא / ܡܲܪܘܵܐ (marwā, “Origanum syriacum syn. Origanum maru”), from Middle Persian 𐭰𐭠𐭫𐭥 (mlc' /marw/), related to Sanskrit मरुव (maruva, “marjoram”). Also found in مَرْدَقُوش (mardaqūš, “marjoram”). The Aramaic has been borrowed into Ancient Greek μᾶρον (mâron) and from Ancient Greek again into Arabic as مَارُون (mārūn, “Origanum syriacum”).

The stone senses, though plausibly deriving from the sense of a comminuted herb, recall Persian مروارید (marvârid, “pearl”). With this consideration مَرْو (marw, “pebble; flint; quartz”) is a doublet of مَرْجَان (marjān, “small pearls; corals”).
