artificial general intelligence

Where it comes from

Used as early as 1997, by Mark Gubrud in a discussion of the implications of fully automated military production and operations, and popularized by AI researcher Ben Goertzel around 2002.

noun artificial general intelligences

  1. countable, uncountable Artificial intelligence which matches or exceeds the intelligence and capabilities of human beings. The real question, I think, is not whether the field as a whole is in any real danger of another AI winter but, rather, whether progress remains limited to narrow AI or ultimately expands to Artificial General Intelligence as well.
