Europeism

  • /jʊəɹəˈpiːɪz(ə)m/

Where it comes from

Borrowed from New Latin Eurōpaeismus, from Europae(us) (“European”) + -ismus (“-ism”), with both elements borrowed from Ancient Greek Εὐρωπαῖος (Eurōpaîos) and -ισμός (-ismós) respectively.

The expected result in Latin, however, is *Eurōpaismus. Compare Greek ευρωπαϊσμός (evropaïsmós). Compare also Latin borrowings from Ancient Greek such as Iūdaismus (“Judaism”).

noun Europeisms

  1. Synonym of Europeanism As already stated, the ideological aspects bearing upon the prognostication in the field of European security reveal a certain contradiction between the concept of Atlantism advocating close links to the USA and that of Europeism, but more often they manifest a correlation of these two aspects.
