יאור

  • [jŏˈʔoːoʀ̟]
  • /jeˈ(ʔ)oʁ/ Modern Israeli

Where it comes from

From earlier *yoʔr-, borrowed from Egyptian i-t*:r-w-mw (jtrw, “river, the Nile”). The word was borrowed into Hebrew after the shift of Egyptian /t/ to /ʔ/, which is attested from the 18th Dynasty onward in the form of the alternative spelling jrw. Cognate with Demotic Egyptian (yr, “river, canal”) and Coptic ⲉⲓⲟⲟⲣ (eioor, “canal”).

noun יְאוֹר · יְאֹר · ye'ór · יְאוֹרִים · יְאוֹרִי

  1. A river, stream, or canal, especially in Egypt, especially the Nile.
