ינשוף

  • /janˈʃuːp/
  • /janˈʃuːf/ [janˈʃuːf]
  • /janˈʃuf/ Modern Israeli

Where it comes from

Probably from the יַקְטוּל of the verb נָשַׁף (nasháf), after bird's calls. Alternatively from the related נֶשֶׁף (néshef, “dusk”). Compare תִּנְשֶׁמֶת. Probably cognate with Akkadian enšūpu/enšūbu (“a bird”) and eššebu (“a kind of owl?”). Ultimately Derived from Proto-Semitic *nVšVp.

noun יַנְשׁוּף · yanshúf · יַנְשׁוּפִים · יַנְשׁוּפִי · יַנְשׁוּפֵנוּ

  1. An owl of the Asio genus.
  2. A breathalyzer (device testing alcohol levels)
