רשרש

  • /ʁiʃˈʁeʃ/ Modern Israeli

Where it comes from

Coined by Hebrew poet, author, and editor Hayim Nahman Bialik, ex nihilo according to him. Klein describes it as onomatopoeic. Yitzhak Avineri describes it as being derived from ר־ע־שׁ (r-ʿ-sh, related to making noise) and compares לִגְלֵג (liglég, “to mock”) in a pilpel pattern of ל־ע־ג (l-ʿ-g) (compare לָעַג (la'ág)).

verb רִשְׁרֵשׁ · rishrésh · יְרַשְׁרֵשׁ · לְרַשְׁרֵשׁ · רִשְׁרוּשׁ · רִשְׁרַשְׁתִּי

  1. construction pi'el to rustle, to make noise

In English

  • rustle to move (something) with a soft crackling sound
