תחנה¹
- /taχaˈna/ Modern Israeli
Where it comes from
Revived from the interpretation of the biblical hapax תַּחֲנֹתִי (2 Kings 6:8) as a noun meaning "camping place, stopping place", from the root ח־נ־ה (kh-n-h); compare חָנָה (khaná, “to camp; to park”). תַּחֲנָה (takhaná) later came to denote a station or stopping place. A competing form, תַּחֲנוּת (takhanút), based on the same interpretation, was coined by David Friedländer in 1823 for a coaching station, but did not become established.
