आदा

  • /ɑː.d̪ɑː/ Hindi, Standard
  • [äː.d̪äː] Hindi, Standard

Where it comes from

Inherited from Sanskrit आर्द्रक (ārdraka), through Prakrit *𑀆𑀤𑁆𑀤𑀅 (*āddaa), from आर्द्र (ārdra, “wet”), as fresh ginger is wet. Cognates include Bengali আদা (ada), Gujarati આદુ (ādu), and Nepali अदुवा (aduwā). Doublet of अदरक (adrak). Tom Hoogervorst instead proposes it and other Indic terms are from Proto-Malayic *halia.

noun ādā · آدا · आदा · आदे · आदों

  1. masculine ginger

    Similar: अदरक
