Where it comes from

Inherited from Proto-New Indo-Aryan *खद्ध (khaddha, “pit, ditch, manure pit”), an alternative form of खाअ (khāa, “dug up, pit, ditch”), from Sanskrit खात (khāta, “excavated”). The -द्धा (-ddhā) suffix is by analogy to other past participles like णद्ध (ṇaddha, “tied”) and बद्ध (baddha, “bound”). Doublet of खात (khāt).
