Cognate with Assamese জেগা (zega), Bengali জায়গা (jaẏga), Gujarati જગ્યા (jagyā), Marathi जागा (jāgā), Nepali जग्गा (jaggā), Old Deccani جاگاہ (jāgāh), Odia ଜାଗା (jāgā), Punjabi ਜਗ੍ਹਾ (jaghā).

The shortening of the vowels may be due to influence from जगत् (jagat, “world”).
