Ultimately from Sanskrit द्व्यर्ध (dvyardha), from द्वि (dvi) + अर्ध (ardha), the first of which is related to Hindi दो (do) and the second of which to आधा (ādhā, “half”). Compare ढाई (ḍhāī) and साढ़े (sāṛhe).

Cognate with Assamese ডেৰ (der), Bengali দেড় (deṛ), Odia ଡେଢ଼ (ḍeṛha), Maithili 𑂙𑂵𑂜 (ḍeṛh), Bhojpuri डेढ़ (ḍēṛh), Punjabi ਡੇਢ /ڈیڈھ (ḍeḍh), Sindhi ڊ۽ڍُ (ḍeḍhu), Churahi डेड्ढ (ḍeḍḍh), Nepali डेड़ (ḍeṛ), Awadhi डेढ़ (ḍeṛh), Konkani देड (deḍ). These terms are from either of:

* Proto-New Indo-Aryan *देअड्ढ (deaḍḍha) or *देवड्ढ (devaḍḍha), continuing *द्व्यैयर्ध (*dvyaiyardha), a derivative of द्व्यर्ध (dvyardha). Compare Old Hindi ड्यौढ (ḍyauḍha), Punjabi ਡੇਊਢ (ḍeūḍha).

* Proto-New Indo-Aryan *देड्ढ (dĕḍḍha), an unexpected contraction of attested Prakrit दिवड्ढ (divaḍḍha). Compare Marathi दीढ (dīḍh).
