पहला

  • /pəɦ.lɑː/ Hindi, Standard
  • [pɛʱ.läː] Hindi, Standard

Where it comes from

Inherited from Sauraseni Apabhramsa पहिल (pahila), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀧𑀳𑀺𑀮 (pahila), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁆𑀭𑀣𑀺𑀮𑁆𑀮 (*prathilla). Sanskrit प्रथम (prathamá, “first”) was reanalysed as having an ordinal suffix -म (-ma), which was replaced by Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀇𑀮𑁆𑀮- (-illa-). Also cognate to now-obsolete Classical Persian فَرْدُم (fardum, “first”). Doublet of प्रथम (pratham) and फ़र्दुम (fardum).
