英語 architecture の訳語。明治初期には「造家」という訳語が当てられ、学会名も造家学会となっていたが、伊東忠太の主張により、建築学会と改称され、architecture の訳語として定着した。ただし、それ以前は、construction の訳語として用いられていた時期もある。
