言語表現におけるおおよその内容。認識した内容の大まかな、もしくは本質的な表現。ある程度の社会的共通性が認められる（低レベルではあっても客観性がある）場合に概念という語が用いられる。また、個々の語の実質的な意味内容。
認識の枠組。類概念。文学という概念からはずれる。
事物の本質をとらえる思考の形式。捨象、抽象化というプロセスを経る。（カント哲学では先天的概念の存在も認める。）
