潮汐が漏斗状の河口等に浸入するとき、前部の抵抗により海水の壁を作り、響きを伴い突進してくるもの。定期的に発生し、中国の銭塘江のものなどが有名。
海鳴。
（「つなみ」と訓読する場合もある）津波。大阪では安政の地震津浪で洗われた区域に構わず新市街を建てて、昭和九年の暴風による海嘯の洗礼を受けた。
