1830年代、欧米における医学・解剖学の進展により、肺結核患者の肺に小さな瘤が見られることがわかり、19世紀半ばにラテン語で"tuberculosis"("tuberculum";"tuber"(瘤・しこり)の指小語+"-osis")と名付けられ、それはオランダ語で"tuberculose"などと呼称されていたところ、1857年、緒方洪庵が訳書『扶氏経験遺訓』で意訳したもの。
