가오릿과의 바닷물고기. 상어, 은상어처럼 연골어류에 속하며, 몸은 가로로 납작하며, 꼬리는 긴 편이다. 전세계의 바다에 서식하며, 일부 종은 민물에 서식한다. 전기가오리, 시끈가오리같이 전기를 내뿜어서 적으로부터 방어하거나 먹이를 잡는 종도 있으며, 노랑가오리같은 일부 종들은 독가시를 가지고 있다.
