파리목 모기과의 곤충. 전 세계에 서식하며 암컷은 산란을 위해서 사람이나 동물의 피를 빨아먹으며 말라리아와 같은 전염병의 매개체이다. 암컷과는 달리 수컷은 식물의 즙을 빨아먹고 산다. 유충은 장구벌레라 불린다. 여름에는 모기가 골칫거리이다.
