동아시아 지역에서 초여름과 한 여름에 계속해서 많이 내리는 비를 일컫는 말. 여름철이 되면서 남쪽의 고온 다습한 북태평양 기단과 한랭 다습한 북동쪽의 오호츠크해 기단이 충돌하면서 이 사이에 형성된 일명 장마전선이라고 하는 정체성 전선대가 형성되어 남북으로 진동하면서 약 한 달 동안 궂은 날씨를 보이며 비를 내리게 한다. 보통 장마가 끝난 후에 본격적인 무더위가 시작된다.
