Lake Ontario

Where it comes from

From lake + Ontario. From Wyandot ontari꞉io (literally “great lake”). From the Huron name for the lake.

proper noun

  1. A lake in North America, between Canada and United States in province of Ontario and state of New York, one of the five Great Lakes of North America. "Indigenous peoples have long been stewards of Lake Ontario (Niigani-gichigami), and they help ensure the lake’s life-giving resources remain abundant and cared for much like family," the CGLL said. Niigani-gichigami is the Anishinaabemowin (Ojibwe) word for Lake Ontario.
