latte macchiato
Where it comes from
Borrowed from Italian latte macchiato.
noun latte macchiatos · latte macchiati
- A coffee-based beverage, prepared by "staining" the steamed "pure" white milk by the addition of espresso, using half or less of the espresso shot of caffè macchiato. I was told by Leno Meiorin, proprietor of the original Caffè Mediterraneum in Berkeley, that he invented it [caffè latte] in 1959 when customers complained that the latte macchiati and cappuccini he was serving were too stingy in size.
