Where it comes from
Borrowed from Russian Ленингра́д (Leningrád), from Ле́нин (Lénin, “Lenin”) + град (grad, “city”). Named in honour of Vladimir Lenin.
proper noun
- Former name of Saint Petersburg: a major city in Russia, from the time of Lenin's death in 1924 until 1991. In Leningrad I met a lady. She was sitting at the hard-currency bar of the Hotel Moscow, sipping gin.
- An oblast and federal subject of Russia, which surrounds, but no longer contains, Saint Petersburg, its former administrative centre.
- The Soviet government, authorities, or secret service. Assassination is pointless. Leningrad would quickly cover up his defalcations and make him into a martyr.
