melongene

Where it comes from

Borrowed from French mélongène, from Medieval Latin melongena, Italian melanzana, from Greek μελιτζάνα (melitzána), from Arabic اَلْبَاذِنْجَان (al-bāḏinjān, “eggplant”), from Classical Persian بادنگان (bādingān), from باتنگان (bātingān), from Sanskrit वातिगगम (vātiga-gama, “eggplant”). Doublet of aubergine, brinjal, and malidzano.

noun melongenes

  1. Caribbean An aubergine; an eggplant. After all, most Trinidadians only have a limited knowledge to cook melongene: we either stew it, fry it, roast it, or curry it, and serve it with rice or roti.
