Mouseion
Where it comes from
Learned borrowing from Ancient Greek Μουσεῖον (Mouseîon).
proper noun the Mouseion · Museum · Musaeum
- An ancient institution said to have been founded by Ptolemy I Soter (c. 369–282 BCE) as a place for music, poetry and philosophy, including the Library of Alexandria. These were stored at the Mouseion, a shrine to the Muses modeled after Aristotle’s Lyceum. Aristotle’s own book collection was said to be among the holdings.
