natron

Where it comes from

From French natron, from Spanish natrón, from Arabic نَطْرُون (naṭrūn), from Ancient Greek νίτρον (nítron, “nitre”), ultimately from Egyptian nṯrj (“natron”): R9

Doublet of niter and trona.

noun

  1. uncountable A crystalline mixture of hydrous sodium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate, with the chemical formula Na₂CO₃·10H₂O. Natron and salt are soluble by liquid, but not all liquid but only such as is cold. Hence water and any of its varieties melt them, but oil does not.
