acira

  • /a.t͡ʃiˈra/

Rhymes with -a

Where it comes from

Maybe from Vulgar Latin *accēnāre (“to wait until the evening”), originally meaning "to wait until the time of dinner". For the rhotacism of the intervocalic nasal, compare fereastră from Latin fenestra; however, this is uncommon in Romanian, especially without cause of dissimilation. Cf. also the related cină, which did not undergo rhotacism.

verb a acira 1st conjugation · aciră · acirat · a acira · acirând

  1. regional to await, to hope for
  2. regional to lurk, to lie in ambush
