Iași

  • /jaʃʲ/

Where it comes from

Uncertain.

Most likely from either the ancient Iazyges, the Roman name of an ancient Sarmatian tribe that once lived in the area, or from a tribe of Alans known as the Jassi prevalent throughout the Carpathian space (confer Jászság in Hungary and related toponyms).

Other proposals include from Kipchak yaasi (“archers”), from yaa (“bow”), from Proto-Turkic *yā(y) (“bow”).

proper noun Iașii

  1. masculine, plural Iasi (the capital and largest city of Iași County, Moldavia, in northeastern Romania)
  2. masculine, plural a county of Romania
