iezmăciune
- /jez.məˈt͡ʃu.ne/
Rhymes with -une
Where it comes from
Uncertain. Compare Aromanian ayizmãciuni. Proposed to be from aiasmă + -ciune, meaning "the month of holy water". Ethnographer Tudor Pamfile noted that among transhumant shepherds (Mocani) in southern Moldavia, a mandatory house-blessing with holy water occurred around Saint Andrew's Day, traditionally viewed as the spiritual onset of winter. The entire month consequently took its name from this protective purification ritual.
