Suceava

  • /suˈtʃe̯ava/

Where it comes from

Unknown. Cf. Reconstruction:Proto-Slavic/suša + suffix -ova. According to historical folk etymology, derived from szűcs (“furrier”) + vár (“fortress”) (cf. Hungarian Szűcsvár), however this is unlikely as the would it would have been rendered phonetically as Sucioara, and the river predates the name of the settlement.

proper noun Suceava · Suceavaua · Suceavale · Suceavalei

  1. feminine Suceava (a river in Romania)
  2. feminine Suceava (the capital city of Suceava County, Romania), named after the river.
  3. feminine a county of Romania, named after the city.
