suflet

  • [ˈsuflet]

Where it comes from

From a Vulgar Latin root *sufflitum, from Latin sufflō, from flō (“to breathe”), equivalent to sufla + -et. Compare to Latin spiritus (“spirit”), from spirō (“breathe”). It appears that when sufflō became the primary term for to breathe in Balkan Romance, the derivative spiritus was reformed by analogy accordingly.

Compare Aromanian suflit, derived from the same Vulgar Latin root.

Compare also the Latin word animus, anima ("soul, also breath") deriving from the Proto-Indo-European root for "to breathe".
