zârnă

  • /ˈzɨr.nə/

Where it comes from

From Dacian *dierna (“black”), compare prodiarna. Compare also the hydronym Cerna, whose classical name Dierna was modified under the influence of the synonymous Proto-Slavic *čьrnъ.

The alternate theory, that it is derived from Proto-Slavic *zьrno (“berry, grain”), is highly implausible based on the archaic and regional forms.

noun zârne · zârnă · zârna · zârnele

  1. feminine Black nightshade (Solanum nigrum), also known as sunberry.

    Similar: solan
