staking²
Where it comes from
From Middle English stakyng, staking, from Old English stacung (“staking”), from Old English *stacian (“to drive stakes”), equivalent to stake + -ing.
noun stakings
- An act of stabbing with a stake. Despite the quick, clean “dustings” shown on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or the bloody stakings in so many vampire films, the stake was not a weapon used to actually destroy a vampire but a tool in a more elaborate exorcism.
