  • /ˈsʌlfəˌɹɛt/

Where it comes from

From Latin sulphuretum (“relating to sulphur; sulphide”), coined in 1788 as sulphuret by the translator of de Morveau, Lavoisier et al.'s 1787 book Méthode de nomenclature chimique James St. John as a translation of French sulfure.

By surface analysis, sulfur + -uret.

noun sulfurets

  1. obsolete A sulfide. The French word for sulphur is soufre, and the new French name for the combinations of sulphur in its simple state with metals, &c. is sulfure. Thus in the French language there is a remarkable difference between the words soufre and sulfure: but in English, especially as spondees are very uncommon

verb sulfurets · sulfureting · sulfuretting · sulfureted · sulfuretted

  1. alternative, obsolete Alternative form of sulfurate
