chwa

Where it comes from

Inherited from Proto-Sabaki *-cwa. Cognate with Ngazidja Comorian -tswa and Giryama -tswa.

Further etymology uncertain. Possibly from Common Bantu *-còa (from which Zulu -hlwa), but Nurse & Hinnebusch consider it a Northeast Coast lexical innovation derived from *-kya (“to dawn”).

verb -chwa · kuchwa · kutokuchwa · kuchweni

  1. of the sun to set, to go down

    Opposite: cha
