Theodore

  • /ˈθiː.əˌdɔː/ UK
  • /ˈθi.əˌdɔɹ/ US

Rhymes with -ɔː(ɹ)

Where it comes from

Learned borrowing from Latin Theodōrus, borrowed from Ancient Greek Θεόδωρος (Theódōros), from θεός (theós, “god”) + δῶρον (dôron, “gift”). The name was popularized in reference to the prominent St Theodore of Amasea. Unrelated to Theodoric.

proper noun Theodor

  1. A male given name from Latin [in turn from Ancient Greek]; the name of a saint, pope, several emperors, etc. It is as well certainly not to call a parcel of idle and ragged young rogues by the titles of Augustus, Orlando, and Theodore: nor does it sound very fitting and heroical to hear a father cry out pompously to his little boy, as we did once, - "You, Sir, there, - Maximilian,- come out of the gutter."
  2. A census-designated place in Mobile County, Alabama, United States.

noun Theodores · Theodor

  1. US, regional A fiador.
