wich¹
noun wiches
- Alternative spelling of wych (“brine spring or well”).
- A wich town, particularly one of several former salt mining towns in Cheshire with a name ending -wich. Droitwich was then clearly more important than any of the Cheshire wiches; indeed the two most northerly of them were reported in 1086 to be "utterly waste", while Nantwich farm was worth only £10 a year.
