The original site and logo..... sadly trademarks would have been a hassle.

Good instinct, and the name is the hard part. Here is how the idea usually goes, and what to keep in mind.

  • Use a different name and look. Copying a famous logo, or a name close to an existing brand, is what draws trademark complaints. A made-up word or a plain descriptive phrase is safer, and a logo built from your own shapes (a columned building is generic enough) is safer than one that mimics someone's artwork.
  • Check before you commit. Search the trademark register in the country you'll mainly operate in (the USPTO's search for the US) and the company registries, so you know who already owns similar names.
  • Talk to a trademark lawyer before you spend money on a brand. A short consultation is far cheaper than a rebrand after a letter arrives. This is general information, not legal advice for your situation.

As for Micwyn itself, the name and logo are the site's own, and any change to them is up to the people who run it. If you'd like to suggest something, the Feedback link at the bottom of every page is where they read ideas.
