What is the automatic collision evasion that Tesla updated my model three with today and how exactly does it work?

Tesla calls it Automatic Collision Evasion. It's part of Full Self-Driving (Supervised), and it's new in the FSD v14.3 releases for HW4/AI4 cars (Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X built roughly from 2023 on). Tesla's release notes describe it this way: it activates FSD (Supervised) to try to keep the car safe, then lets you continue driving. It can engage while you're driving manually, when the system decides you aren't paying enough attention (for example, reaching toward the back seat) or when FSD may have been disengaged by accident.

To make it work, three things must be on: an active FSD purchase or subscription, Automatic Emergency Braking (Controls, then Autopilot), and FSD (Supervised) itself. Owners with only basic or enhanced Autopilot don't get it.

I can't see which build your car received today, so check Controls, then Software, then Additional Vehicle Information. Tesla's 2026.38.5.1 release, dated October 13, 2026, bundles FSD v14.3.12 with the feature. Earlier releases (2026.27.6 in September and 2026.33.5 on October 7) also carried it, so today's install may be a later wave. Tesla has not published a detailed technical description, and the '20% faster reaction time' figure circulating in press coverage is Tesla-cited marketing, not independent testing. Keep your hands ready and your eyes on the road, since FSD remains a supervised system.
